On February 26, 1969, his 27th birthday, Leonard S had been sick for six weeks with misdiagnosed pneumonic tuberculosis and was in severe emotional pain. Having lost 40 pounds and suffering nightly sweats, he prayed for death for several days, complaining to God about being ignored. Suddenly he found himself at ceiling level viewing his body below. During ascension from his body, he experienced an orgasmic sensation that was steady and intense, eventually finding it distracting. He saw a dimly lit figure in an alcove over his left shoulder and communicated telepathically with this entity who said it wasn't his time to leave. Leonard insisted on dying, saying his life belonged to him. The entity agreed he could leave anytime but needed to return to finish his life. Leonard then sat before a large screen watching his life experiences pass by - the good, bad, and ugly - feeling strangely unemotional and detached even from traumatic events. After the review, he noticed a bright light at the end of a tunnel and ran toward it despite the entity's warning. The tunnel had undulating cave-like walls with stressed people hiding between them. He entered a giant room with featureless outlines of loved ones, then found himself on a stage with light penetrating him completely. The love was overwhelming - every cell filled with it - causing him to laugh and cry simultaneously with joy. He realized he had been there before and had taken this life to have something to give back for the ecstasy experienced in the light. Having only complaints from his life, he immediately understood he must return to fulfill his purpose and instantly found himself back in bed.
BIBLICAL ASSESSMENT: This profound NDE contains numerous elements aligning with biblical theology. The out-of-body experience supports the dualist understanding that consciousness exists independently of the physical body (2 Corinthians 5:6-8). The life review parallels biblical teaching that our deeds are recorded and reviewed (2 Corinthians 5:10, Revelation 20:12). The tunnel experience might represent the transition between earthly and spiritual realms. The overwhelming divine love that penetrated every cell reflects God's all-encompassing love described in Ephesians 3:17-19. The realization of pre-existence with God and choosing to take earthly life to "give back" resonates with the biblical concept of believers being chosen "before the foundation of the world" (Ephesians 1:4) and created for good works (Ephesians 2:10). The transformative effect - returning with purpose and becoming more compassionate - demonstrates authentic spiritual encounter. However, problematic elements include the suggestion of pre-mortal choice to incarnate, which resembles reincarnation theology rather than biblical teaching about God sovereignly creating each person (Psalm 139:13-16). The entity's agreement that Leonard owned his life contradicts biblical teaching that our lives belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The absence of Christ, explicit heaven/hell imagery, or moral judgment is notable.
