At age 20 in 1974, Leonard experienced a heroin overdose that resulted in clinical death. He first saw a bright light unlike any on Earth and traveled through it at very fast speed, feeling no pain, hunger, or gravity - a feeling he describes as incomparable to anything on Earth. He then saw a black curtain open to reveal a color never seen on Earth. Though he couldn't see anyone, he heard his grandfather's voice say "There he is!" in a happy tone. He was then pulled back through the tunnel of light, feeling gravity return which felt awful, not wanting to return. He found himself hovering in the corner of the bathroom ceiling, looking down at his dead body and his panicked friends who had given up trying to revive him. He returned to his body in a bathtub filled with freezing water and ice, noticing he had an erection and had defecated. When he stood up, one friend had turned white with shock. The friend said Leonard had been dead for twenty minutes. Leonard felt no heroin effects afterward and was scared by what happened. The experience left him with no fear of death, often wishing he hadn't been sent back as it seemed much better where he was going. He can remember the event as if it happened yesterday. Since the NDE, he experiences heat in his palms and sometimes speaks about things two weeks before they happen.
BIBLICAL ASSESSMENT: This NDE demonstrates several elements consistent with biblical accounts of consciousness after death. The bright supernatural light could represent divine glory as described in 1 Timothy 6:16 and Revelation 21:23. The encounter with his deceased grandfather's voice aligns with the biblical teaching that spirits continue after death (Hebrews 12:23) and suggests the "cloud of witnesses" mentioned in scripture. The out-of-body experience where he observed his dead body from above supports the dualist view that consciousness can exist independently of the physical brain, consistent with Paul's description of being "absent from the body" (2 Corinthians 5:8). The inability to see beings but hearing them might parallel how Moses heard God's voice but could not see His face (Exodus 33:20). The experience of being sent back against his will could reflect that our times are in God's hands (Psalm 31:15). However, concerning elements include the drug-induced nature of the experience, which scripture warns against through prohibitions on pharmakeia (Galatians 5:20). The development of psychic abilities (heat in palms, precognition) resembles occult practices forbidden in Deuteronomy 18:10-12. The absence of moral judgment, Christ, repentance themes, or heaven/hell imagery is notable from a biblical perspective.
