Kyle was a recruit undergoing Michigan State Police training in November 1978. During defensive tactics training, he and other recruits were learning the carotid choke hold technique. Kyle's partner applied the hold, and Kyle was supposed to tap out when feeling lightheaded but lost consciousness instead. Kyle experienced darkness accompanied by a deep vibrating sound that he initially thought might be an alarm clock. The darkness cleared and he found himself moving toward the upper corner of the gym. He then looked down and saw his partner holding up his unconscious body from a position about 5 feet to the side and 10 feet above the gym floor. He could clearly see his slumped form being supported. The experience ended with darkness returning and hearing his name being called repeatedly with commands to "Recruit stand up!" When he opened his eyes, an instructor was standing before him looking angry that Kyle had gone unconscious. The class continued as if nothing had happened, leaving Kyle confused but sensing something extraordinary had occurred. Kyle later experienced a paranormal event in 1985 when he heard his grandmother's voice calling his name twice on the night she died from a heart attack, at the exact time of her death.
BIBLICAL ASSESSMENT: This experience contains several elements consistent with biblical accounts of consciousness surviving bodily death. The out-of-body experience where Kyle observed his physical form from above aligns with the biblical understanding of humans having both body and spirit (2 Corinthians 5:8). His ability to perceive events while unconscious supports the dualist view of human nature found in scripture. The experience of darkness followed by altered consciousness could parallel various biblical accounts of spiritual experiences. From a conservative evangelical perspective, this NDE lacks many typical biblical elements - there is no encounter with divine beings, no life review with moral judgment, no heaven or hell imagery, and no encounter with deceased relatives during the NDE itself. The later auditory experience with his grandmother's voice at her time of death, while suggesting continued consciousness after death, would be viewed with caution by conservative theology as potential deception rather than genuine spirit communication, as scripture warns against consulting the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
