During a life-threatening infection in March 2001, Kayleen experienced respiratory failure in her bathroom. After collapsing and being unable to breathe, her husband attempted resuscitation by hitting her chest and body against the wall. During this critical event, Kayleen separated from her physical body and observed her husband's frantic revival attempts from above. She experienced herself "floating" or "flying" to her daughters' bedroom while feeling an overwhelming sense of freedom, calmness, and happiness. The experience alternated between feelings of sadness for her children and joy at being free from physical constraints. She described feeling "forever" and that "everything that was/is possible" during the timeless state. Suddenly, she felt herself being "swooped" back into her body and breathing air again. Initially angry about returning to life, she then felt scared realizing she might have actually died, followed by fear again when remembering she had two babies to raise.

BIBLICAL ANALYSIS: This experience contains several elements common to biblical and traditional Christian accounts of death and spiritual separation. The out-of-body experience where Kayleen observed her body from above aligns with descriptions of the soul's separation from the physical form. Her feelings of peace, freedom, and joy echo biblical descriptions of release from earthly suffering. The concern for her children and eventual return to care for them reflects biblical themes of earthly responsibilities and God's timing for death. However, the experience lacks explicit encounters with divine beings, heaven, hell, or religious figures typically found in more overtly Christian NDEs. The absence of life review, judgment scenes, or encounters with deceased relatives makes this a relatively simple OBE-type NDE focused primarily on the separation and return of consciousness.
