Karen M underwent an emergency cesarean section on June 23, 1990, due to preeclampsia that threatened both her and her baby's life. During the surgery, she told the doctor her lips were numb and she couldn't feel them. After speaking, she stopped talking as the doctor began patting her face. Initially she could vaguely feel it, but after turning her head left, she lost all sensation and hearing. Everything turned black around her. In the distance, she saw a light that began moving toward her - or perhaps she was moving toward it. As it approached, she felt unafraid despite the strangeness of the situation. The light was unlike anything she had ever seen - bright yet not painful to look at, emanating incredible warmth. She felt happy and completely without fear. Just as the light began to surround her, it started backing away. She wondered why it was leaving, then realized she was the one moving backward into darkness. She saw no beings and heard nothing, experiencing only the light and its profound emotional impact. She died for five minutes before being resuscitated, though those minutes in the light felt like mere seconds. The experience transformed her spiritual beliefs, making her believe in God as Creator living in all things around us. She became more aware of Earth's beauty and humanity's connection to it.
