At age fourteen, Joy visited friends for a weekend pool visit. Unable to swim, she was jokingly pushed by friend Fay and fell backward into the deep end. Friends initially thought she was joking but realized she was drowning when they saw her floating still on her back. At some point, Joy's spirit floated in the air above her body, observing a crowd gathering on the pool landing and seeing herself on the floor. She witnessed friends Fay and Jess crying while people screamed for an ambulance. A force then drew her to a beautiful, peaceful place. Floating toward a gate, she encountered her deceased maternal grandmother whom she'd never met. Her grandmother called her by name, saying it wasn't her time, and showed her mother in their Brooklyn kitchen, explaining her mother would never forgive herself for letting Joy visit friends. Joy saw and was drawn into an extraordinarily peaceful, calming light. An oversized being with a face of bright light and metal-like feet stopped her, saying it wasn't her time and she had work to do. He showed her having a baby in the future, then insisted she return. Her grandmother whispered "Your mother needs you." Joy felt suctioned back into her body, coughed up water, and was taken to the Emergency Room. She immediately told everyone about her experience.
BIBLICAL ANALYSIS: This experience contains numerous biblical elements that align well with conservative Christian theology. The out-of-body experience during drowning parallels accounts where individuals observe earthly events from a spiritual perspective. Meeting her deceased grandmother aligns with the biblical concept of conscious existence after death. The being with the bright light face strongly suggests a divine or angelic presence, consistent with biblical descriptions of angels or even theophanic encounters. The metal-like feet echo Daniel's vision of a being with feet like burnished bronze. Being told it's not her time reflects God's sovereignty over life and death. The vision of future motherhood could represent divine foreknowledge. The emphasis on her mother needing her reflects biblical values of family bonds and honoring parents. The experience contains minimal problematic elements from an evangelical perspective. While some might question communication with deceased relatives, the Bible records Samuel's post-death appearance to Saul, suggesting limited divine allowance for such encounters. The lack of explicit Christian imagery (cross, Jesus by name) is notable but not necessarily problematic, as God can reveal Himself in various ways. The being Joy encountered seems consistent with biblical descriptions of powerful angels or divine manifestations. The transformative effect leading to certainty about heaven and God's reality represents appropriate spiritual fruit. Overall, this experience demonstrates high compatibility with biblical faith, focusing on divine sovereignty, purposeful life, family values, and the reality of the spiritual realm without introducing unbiblical concepts.
