Joanie S experienced two NDEs, first during childbirth in 1973 with severe convulsions, and second during ectopic pregnancy surgery in 1992. In the first experience, she convulsed out of her body, viewed it from above, and was pulled through ceiling tiles into a tunnel leading to a marble room with a cloaked "Grim Reaper" figure who directed her to choose a door. She entered a past life vision of prehistoric times where she recognized a woman as her grandmother from multiple incarnations. In this vision, a wolf attacked her child, she fought it off but was bitten, and gained the wolf's spirit energy. In the 1992 experience during surgery, she returned to the marble room where the child she was losing told her not to worry as she would return before year's end. Within two weeks, her sister-in-law became pregnant, and Joanie recognized the baby as the child from her vision.
The primary veridical element is the accurate prediction about the lost child returning through her sister-in-law's pregnancy, which occurred exactly as foretold. The recognition of the specific baby as the same soul provides evidential support for consciousness continuity. The past-life memories and multi-incarnation recognition of her grandmother suggest access to impossible knowledge, though this cannot be independently verified. BIBLICAL ASSESSMENT: These NDEs present severe theological problems from a biblical perspective. The prominent reincarnation themes - recognizing her grandmother from multiple past lives, experiencing a prehistoric incarnation, and a child's soul returning in another body - directly contradict Hebrews 9:27 ("it is appointed unto men once to die"). The "Grim Reaper" figure resembles occult death imagery rather than biblical angels or divine messengers. While the predictive element about the returning child was verified, this falls into the category of forbidden divination rather than godly prophecy. The past-life regression contradicts biblical linear history and the uniqueness of each soul. The experience promoted belief in reincarnation and soul recycling fundamentally opposed to biblical resurrection doctrine. Though evidentially interesting for consciousness survival, the theological framework is completely antithetical to Christian orthodoxy, promoting Hindu-Buddhist cyclic existence over biblical linear redemption history.
