While working on a self-made electric call bell for a school exhibition in July 1978, Dr. Kumar accidentally grabbed a live 220V wire with both hands while alone in his farmhouse room. After initial severe pain from the prolonged electric shock, the pain ceased and he began rising from his body, floating up to about ten feet near the roof tiles. He could see the letters on the roof tiles from inches away, appearing very large. In this painless, cool, emotionally-full state with crystal clear consciousness, he observed his body lying on the floor still holding the wire. He attempted to call for help but no one could hear him. Through the walls, he saw his father slowly approaching from the other end of the house, chewing tobacco and murmuring. When his father reached the spot and tried to lift him without knowing about the live wire, Kumar experienced great pain and fell back into his body. He was unconscious for ten minutes before waking to find both parents present. His mother had rescued both him and his father by switching off the mains, though he never saw her during the OBE. His first words were "Mom I experienced today how one dies," which concerned his parents who thought he might have gone insane.
