Jack D experienced a near-death event following a heroin overdose in July 1994. After purchasing and using three bags of heroin in New York City, he lost consciousness in his recliner at home. His 8-year-old son, awakened by what he believed was God telling him his father was dying, alerted his mother who called paramedics. Jack was found without pulse or respiration and required resuscitation with injections and defibrillator shocks.
During his NDE, Jack found himself standing in a corner of his living room, observing everything in black and white like an old movie. He watched paramedics working on his naked body while unable to move from the corner or communicate. He could see his wife on the recliner where he had been sitting and his middle son in the bedroom nervously bouncing his newborn. He observed a paramedic show his wife a syringe and get her consent, then watched them administer the injection and use the defibrillator twice. Each shock created a "snow" effect in his vision before the picture returned. The most remarkable veridical observations included Jack witnessing the exact sequence of medical interventions while having no pulse or respiration. He accurately described what each family member was doing in different rooms, the paramedics' actions, and specific details like the syringe being held in the paramedic's right hand. His wife later confirmed every detail, stating "the only way that I could have seen that was if I was conscious and observing it." His son's report of being awakened by God added another verified element. After recovery, Jack interpreted this as a divine warning about the trauma his death would cause his family. The experience led to significant lifestyle changes and cessation of drug use. He believes a higher being allowed him to witness the impact on his family as a powerful lesson.
