Harold, age 4, was at a family picnic by a lake in 1960 when his older cousin threw a wooden matchbox into the water that Harold wanted. Harold jumped in after it but could not swim and the water was over his head. His cousin ran for help while Harold drowned. His father and uncle pulled him out and attempted CPR despite lacking training. He was estimated to be without breathing for 5 minutes. After entering the water, Harold found himself surrounded by vague images in front of a bright light coming from all directions. He felt overwhelming love like that of a grandmother coming from each presence. Multiple beings told him it was not his time and he needed to go back, saying they would see him again in the future. When he revived, he was in his uncle's car being driven to the hospital where he spent two days under observation. The experience gave Harold certainty about God's existence and the afterlife. He felt he understood life's purpose during the experience but lost that understanding upon return. Harold never told anyone about the experience for 51 years. He now feels that earthly religions do not quite get it right, believing they make claims to prove superiority over other faiths. He knows that love and understanding are most important and opposes religious violence and exclusivism.
