Harold experienced cardiac arrest following a septal ablation procedure for HOCM in June 2006. He had experienced multiple cardiac flat lines after the procedure, typically waking up a night later. This particular flat line was different - instead of waking up later, he suddenly became aware that he was flying like Superman, feeling like an orange pip squeezed from between fingers. The experience was sunny and warm with a wonderful breeze on his face. He found himself flying over a deep blue bay with sandy beaches and a volcanic tropical island visible. An unusual large sailing ship with one huge sail and multiple decks (at least three) sat at anchor in the bay. Tiny people crowded the uppermost deck, laughing, gesturing, waving, and calling for him to join them. Harold felt wonderful and was flying straight toward the ship when everything faded. He returned to find medical staff around him and his wife gripping his hand crushingly tight. The experience connected with his ancestral pagan/heathen spirituality, which he had been exploring. He believes he glimpsed ancestors waiting for him and that the experience validated his spiritual path. Harold experienced no headache or recovery time unlike his other cardiac episodes.
Biblical Analysis: This experience presents significant theological challenges from a biblical perspective. While the out-of-body experience during cardiac arrest supports consciousness surviving bodily death, the content diverges markedly from Christian theology. The tropical paradise with a sailing ship differs entirely from biblical descriptions of heaven. More concerning is Harold's interpretation through pagan/heathen spirituality and belief he encountered ancestors, which contradicts the biblical teaching that believers go to be with Christ. His movement toward ancestral pagan spirituality after the experience directly opposes biblical monotheism and Christian faith. The absence of God, Jesus, angels, or any biblical elements, combined with reinforcement of pagan beliefs, suggests this may have been a deceptive spiritual experience from an evangelical perspective.
