Fergus attempted suicide by overdosing on pills combined with alcohol (lager, stout, and spirits). After losing consciousness, he found himself in the hospital where nurses were attempting to revive him by slapping his face. He experienced an out-of-body state, watching himself from outside his body as three nurses worked on him. He could clearly see himself on the gurney and feel the dread of one nurse. When they began using a defibrillator, he felt himself being "sucked" back toward his body with each shock. He experienced a moment of choice - to stay or go - and decided to try life again. Upon making this decision, he immediately returned to his body, jumped off the trolley, and left the hospital.
Biblical Assessment: This experience contains several elements consistent with biblical accounts of consciousness surviving bodily death. The out-of-body experience aligns with Paul's description of being "caught up to the third heaven" (2 Corinthians 12:2-4) and the biblical understanding that humans possess both body and spirit. The moment of choice between life and death reflects the sovereignty of God over life and death, as seen in Deuteronomy 30:19, "I have set before you life and death... therefore choose life." The experience of watching medical personnel work on his body from an external vantage point supports the dualist view that consciousness can exist independently of the physical brain, consistent with biblical anthropology. The absence of typical NDE elements like tunnels, deceased beings, or life reviews makes this a simpler case that avoids many potentially problematic new age elements. No unbiblical concepts such as reincarnation, universal salvation, or occult practices were present. The experiencer did not report encountering spiritual beings or receiving special knowledge. The straightforward nature of this OBE during clinical death provides evidential support for consciousness surviving bodily death without introducing elements that conflict with orthodox Christian theology.
