In November 1982, 19-year-old Dewayne was stabbed numerous times with a butcher knife, lost extreme amounts of blood, and went unconscious. During the emergency response, he found himself floating above his body, observing the emergency personnel working inside the ambulance. The ambulance appeared as if cut open, allowing him to see everything happening inside.
He distinctly observed the emergency team cutting up his favorite pants and applying the defibrillator to his chest. He watched them attempt defibrillation once without success, then on the second attempt felt immediately sucked back into his body, feeling extremely weak. His conscious observation included specific details about the medical procedures being performed. Dewayne made two specific observations: watching them cut his favorite pants and seeing the defibrillator applied twice to his chest. The thought about his pants demonstrates maintained personality and awareness during the OBE. The accurate count of defibrillation attempts suggests veridical perception. He awakened in the hospital in excruciating pain, confirming his return to physical consciousness. The experience included clear out-of-body perception with specific procedural observations during clinical death from trauma.
