In June 2000, Denise was in a catastrophic head-on collision when a car driving the wrong direction hit their Suburban, killing all three occupants of the other vehicle. While others in her vehicle were knocked unconscious, Denise remained conscious with severe injuries including a punctured lung and burst intestines and stomach. As she waited for the ambulance on the back of a pickup truck, EMTs urged her to keep her eyes open. Despite fighting to stay conscious, she eventually succumbed to exhaustion. Her eyes became heavy and she could no longer hear the EMT's voice. She felt warm and all pain disappeared. She found herself in an illuminated space of pure light, fully aware she was passing over and surprisingly unafraid. She felt completely alone yet totally at peace. Initially thinking she would die, she realized she needed to return and fight for her life with the EMT. Upon returning, she felt pain and discomfort but also confidence she was being looked after. The experience felt like an hour though it lasted only about ten minutes. Throughout, she experienced a brilliant, supporting light that was bright but not blinding, feeling comfortable, warm, and filled with peacefulness, excitement, happiness and confidence.
From a biblical perspective, this experience demonstrates consciousness persisting through severe physical trauma, supporting the biblical view of the soul as distinct from the body. The peaceful light and absence of fear during the dying process align with biblical promises about God's presence in death. Her choice to return to help the EMT save her life reflects cooperation with God's preservation of life. The experience lacks any unbiblical elements and provides pure testimony to consciousness beyond physical trauma.
