In winter 1977, Denise was sick with pneumonia during a blizzard while her father was away on business. When her mother called from the basement to take cough medicine, Denise felt her body fall in slow motion and heard her head hit the floor. Feeling like a battery needing recharge, she sensed that answering her mother would mean death. Her mother found her unconscious and carried her to the sofa, instructing her four-year-old sister to watch her. With phones out from the blizzard, her mother ran to neighbors in pajamas and slippers through unplowed streets. The ambulance took an hour to arrive despite the hospital being only six miles away. During this time, Denise was dead for an unknown duration. She found herself at one end of a tunnel with a group of people at the other end, outlined by beautiful yellow light emanating from behind them. Though she couldn't see faces in the darkness, she recognized two men as her Irish grandfather's brothers by their distinctive 1930s-1940s wool hats. Then a voice she believes was Jesus spoke with incredible power: "DENISE! GO BACK! IT'S NOT YOUR TIME YET!" The voice contained the sound of every good and kind comment ever made to her. She felt an electrical surge of energy and returned, awakening to paramedics performing CPR.
From a biblical perspective, this experience strongly aligns with Christian theology. The tunnel and light imagery, encounter with deceased relatives, and especially the authoritative voice commanding her return all support biblical concepts of the afterlife and divine sovereignty. The identification of the voice as Jesus, speaking with authority about her life's timing, reflects Christ's lordship over life and death.
