Darlene experienced two separate NDEs, first in 1968 at age 13 during goiter surgery, and again in 1979 during emergency surgery. In 1968, during a three-hour operation that turned urgent when the sample proved toxic, her heart stopped beating. She found herself wondering why her grandmother's flowerpot was in the operating theater and noticed the absence of medical staff. She immediately told everyone about this experience upon waking but felt disbelieved. In 1979, after waiting three hours at a health center with stomach pain, she was rushed to emergency surgery. During this second NDE, she glided through a tunnel toward a bright light. As she approached the tunnel's end, a hand stopped her advance and a voice told her "It is not yet your time, go back." She cried throughout her return journey, devastated by the sadness of not being allowed into the light. She then jumped up on the operating table where resuscitation was in progress. Both times, medical staff confirmed her heart had stopped and she had been clinically dead.
From a biblical perspective, these experiences align remarkably well with scriptural accounts. The tunnel and light experience is consistent with many biblical near-death accounts and the transition from earthly to heavenly realms. The authoritative hand stopping her progress and the divine pronouncement about timing reflects God's sovereignty over life and death. Her emotional response of sadness at being sent back suggests she experienced something profoundly beautiful and peaceful, consistent with being in divine presence. The experiences lack any unbiblical elements such as reincarnation or universalist theology. The clear message about divine timing aligns with Ecclesiastes 3:2 about there being a time to be born and a time to die.
