At age six, Dale experienced a life-threatening choking incident during dinner with his mother and twelve-year-old brother. He swallowed a piece of meat that was unfortunately attached by a sinew to another piece still in his mouth, causing the second piece to completely block his windpipe. Unable to breathe and turning blue according to his brother's account, Dale suddenly found himself observing the entire event from a corner of the room near the ceiling.
From this elevated perspective, Dale could see his own body lying on the floor with his mother and brother watching helplessly. Beside him in the corner near the ceiling, he sensed a spiritual being whom he didn't specifically identify but felt was a spiritual "big brother" he had known since forever. Together they watched the events below unfold as though everything was pre-planned. There was a profound sense of knowing - they would wait until the right moment arrived, then Dale would return to his body. Both Dale and this being shared an understanding that the outcome was obvious and predetermined. The experience was characterized by a complete absence of fear or concern. Dale describes it as having a quality of inevitability - "We knew exactly how this would play out." The tacit agreement between Dale and the spiritual being suggested this was a temporary, planned event with a known resolution. When the moment came, Dale suddenly returned to his body, bringing with him crucial knowledge - he needed to swallow the second piece of meat to clear his airway and survive. This life-saving information appeared to come directly from his out-of-body experience. Dale's perception during the experience was remarkably different from normal vision - he describes it as "visual perception" rather than vision, noting he had no physical eyes yet possessed a much wider field of awareness than earthly sight allows. Time seemed to stop during the experience, with no sense of temporal passage. The encounter left Dale with lasting psychic sensitivities and altered perceptions that he didn't fully recognize as unusual until decades later when reading other NDEs helped him understand his differences from others. This childhood NDE fundamentally shaped his worldview, though he initially thought such experiences were normal, leading to decades of trying unsuccessfully to reconcile his experience with Christian dogma before ultimately leaving Christianity for a worldview more compatible with his direct experience. BIBLICAL ANALYSIS: This childhood NDE presents both alignments and tensions with biblical theology. The presence of a spiritual "big brother" known "since forever" could represent a guardian angel, consistent with biblical teachings about angels ministering to children (Matthew 18:10). The predetermined nature of events aligns with divine providence and God's sovereignty over life and death. The life-saving knowledge received during the experience might represent divine intervention to preserve life according to God's plan. However, Dale's ultimate rejection of Christianity because it conflicted with his experience raises theological concerns about the source and nature of his encounter.
