In October 1969, young Cynthia was hospitalized with a pinealoma (brain tumor) that doctors said should have killed her at birth or by age 3-4. During her extended hospital stay, she experienced multiple profound spiritual encounters. First, while bathing, she had a vision of her brain cut in half with a spot in the center, understanding she would die but feeling unafraid after hearing God's voice say "Because you trust me." About a week later, she fell into what appeared to be sleep but was actually clinical death - the nurse later reported finding her with blood pressure 0/0, no heartbeat, and no breathing for 45 minutes.
During this death state, Cynthia was sucked up through what seemed like a black vacuum cleaner where she couldn't move or breathe, then emerged in a grey misty area where she could function normally. Her deceased grandmother appeared and pointed to a magnificent white mansion with perfectly manicured dark green grass, numerous flowers, and white pillars reminiscent of Zeus's dwelling. A bright light descended the staircase, stopping before her, showing her life in a TV-like display, and inviting her to follow. Cynthia refused, explaining that if she stayed she would be "a crying angel sitting on a cloud playing a harp" and would ruin God's reputation. She feared her death would cause her father's heart attack, mother's institutionalization, and siblings' separation into different homes. God laughed at her reasoning and promised to bring her back two more times to show what she was giving up. In the second visit, they walked through a beautiful mountain with talking animals, received fresh twelve-grain bread from a farm woman, and drank apple juice in a cabin. God explained that "Cindy's Heaven is made of whatever makes her soul happy." They viewed the New Jerusalem from a distance. The third visit showed her personal heaven - a mountain cabin with quilts she had made, vegetable soup brewing, and a flute. God showed her she could travel anywhere in heaven, including oceans and universes. As they walked along the wall of New Jerusalem, she finally saw His left hand holding her right. God allowed her seven questions. She asked about surviving high school (yes, but not easy), marriage and children (yes, with trials), how God could send people to hell if He loves them (He doesn't - people choose hell; He has forgiven them but they must forgive themselves), forgiving murderers/rapists (there's good in all people), whether only one religion enters heaven (all who believe and have faith, even those who don't outwardly think they do), and was told she would always see Him again. When she returned after 45 minutes of clinical death, the shocked nurse was about to call for pronouncement of death. BIBLICAL ANALYSIS: This extraordinary experience contains both deeply biblical elements and some theological complexities. The encounter with God/Jesus as a personal, laughing, understanding figure who walks and talks with her reflects the intimate relationship described in scripture.
