In April 1984, David was working on a research vessel when he and others attempted to reach shore in rough seas using a zodiac boat. A massive wave crashed down, folding the boat in half and catapulting him into the ocean. Unable to find the surface in the darkness, his life vest failed to work. After holding his breath for what seemed very long, he tried to breathe saltwater and experienced cold darkness. Light grew around him as he left his body, drawn to beings of light who welcomed him with incredible love. About a dozen beings surrounded him like family. He experienced a life review seeing not just images but feeling emotions of how his actions affected others. He was shown future events including that he would survive lung cancer. He heard clearly "this is not your time, you must return" and was told he had a purpose. The bitter end of a rope wrapped around his arm pulled him to surface. He later had two more transformational experiences over the years, including being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer as shown in his NDE.
