Beckie W was around 5 years old playing in a field with her stepbrother when they heard a sound in the woods and started running toward her grandmother's house. She went back for her jar of grasshoppers, but while running back down the field, she tripped over a molehill and fell on the broken jar. Her father saw her crying and carried her to the car. Her stepmother held her wrapped in towels and blankets during the 50-mile trip to the hospital. She had lost a lot of blood, and the glass almost punctured her lung. The doctor said she had dangerously high blood pressure and if it had been any higher, she would have died.
During emergency surgery, Beckie found herself sitting next to someone way above herself, looking down on the operating room where the doctor and six other people were working on her. She could see the bright surgical light shining on her body and the doctors in white. The person beside her had their arm around her, telling her everything was going to be OK. They had a conversation that she can no longer fully remember. The scene appeared theatrical - everything around where she was sitting was dark, but looking down she saw a spotlight-like circle shining on the group of doctors gathered around her body. The male presence beside her kept reassuring her that everything would be alright. She felt confused about what was happening and why she could see herself and the doctors as if watching someone else. She experienced incredible peace and happiness, feeling united with the world and suddenly understanding everything about the universe. The being beside her seemed to be there specifically to keep watch over her during this critical time. Though Beckie was very young during this experience, it remains almost completely clear in her memory to this day. When she closes her eyes, she can still see it and remember everything, including feelings she cannot put into words. Throughout her life since then, spirits both good and bad have made their presence known to her in various ways. Most recently, someone called her name when she was alone, which occurred around the time her Aunt Fey died, though she didn't learn of the death until three days later. Biblical Assessment: Beckie W's childhood near-death experience contains elements that align with biblical accounts of divine protection and spiritual reality. The comforting male presence with his arm around her during surgery could represent an angel assigned to protect and comfort, consistent with Psalm 91:11: "For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."
