Barbara E had spent an emotionally difficult day on the couch after her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. That night in September 1983, after lying down in bed while her husband Ed was in the adjoining bathroom, she suddenly became extremely nauseated, leaned over the bed, began vomiting, and everything went black. She experienced a sudden loss of blood pressure and had a small seizure.
Barbara found herself hurling through a tunnel-type atmosphere, then situated in the midst of a startling, seemingly alive, white light. Initially stunned and confused, she wondered where she was and what was happening. When she realized she must be dead, the light penetrated throughout her and she felt the most magnificent warmth, peace, and acceptance imaginable. She felt awe, loved, and cradled. The light loved her completely, knew her through and through, accepted all her foibles and weaknesses, and felt humor about how seriously she took herself and her life. As Barbara settled into this unconditional love, she realized the utterly absolute intelligence of the light. Its creativity and intellect were emotionally and psychologically beyond comprehension. Through telepathic melding with the light, she sensed at least a minute degree of what it contained - zillions of scrolls of data about the true nature of reality kept unraveling. The central message was clear: Reality is vastly larger, multi-layered and multi-dimensional than we realize. Consciousness can experience so much more than commonly practiced. Everything has purpose and meaning. Just as she was settling into this wondrous environment, she heard the first actual speaking voice - everything had been telepathic until then. A deep, masculine voice asked, "Do you want to go back?" Understanding it meant returning to earthly life, her immediate thought was "No!" The voice then said, "If you want to go back, concentrate on the sound." Listening to the left side, she heard far away through a distant tunnel her husband Ed's voice calling her name. As soon as she concentrated on his voice, she lost a second then was back in bed with him standing over her, screaming her name as loud as he could. Biblical Assessment: Barbara E's experience contains many elements consistent with biblical accounts of divine encounters. The brilliant white light aligns with biblical descriptions of God's glory and presence, as in 1 Timothy 6:16 describing God as "dwelling in unapproachable light." The overwhelming sense of love, peace, and complete knowledge of her being reflects God's omniscience and perfect love described throughout scripture. The telepathic communication and revelation of reality's true nature parallel prophetic experiences where God reveals hidden truths. The masculine voice offering choice about returning could represent divine sovereignty working with human will. The humor about human seriousness reflects biblical wisdom about God's perspective on human concerns (Psalm 2:4). However, some elements require careful theological consideration. While the experience powerfully conveys God's love and omniscience, it lacks explicit Christian content such as encountering Jesus or hearing the gospel message. The revelation about multi-dimensional reality and expanded consciousness, while not necessarily contradicting scripture, moves into speculative territory not clearly addressed in the Bible. The absence of any mention of sin, redemption, or Christ's role in salvation is notable, though this could simply reflect the brief nature of the encounter. From a conservative evangelical perspective, this experience appears largely compatible with biblical theology, presenting a genuine encounter with divine love and presence without introducing clearly unbiblical elements like reincarnation or universal salvation.
