Art J was around 8 years old when his brother became enraged and chased him around the house. Art hid next to his mother's bed, but his brother found him, pinned him down, and began choking him with rage in his eyes. Art cried out "Stop!" and "I can't breathe!" but his brother's grip only got stronger. He heard something like a snap and went out cold. According to his brother's later report, Art had no heartbeat for 4 to 5 hours, an extraordinarily long period suggesting either exaggeration or a truly remarkable event.
During the experience, Art drifted up from his body and observed his brother backing away and putting his hands on his head, staying in that position for a while. Art saw himself with a bluish aura around his body. Looking straight ahead, he saw what appeared to be a rough cave that was too dark to see to the end, surrounded by darkness. Though he couldn't move, he could see the cave's sides. In the pitch black, he saw a cloaked figure with its hood down to its chest. The figure lifted what appeared to be a hand draped in the cloak's sleeve and pointed at Art with an abnormally long finger made of bone, saying "You." The last thing Art remembered was being in a dark place with the cloaked figure beside him, along with some smoke-like entities. The next day he got up and his brother told him about the extended period without a heartbeat. After this experience, Art felt he was being followed by the cloaked figure and would occasionally see it. He developed an ability to concentrate and see what he believes are the dead - things others don't see. Art's experience profoundly changed him. He became a gentler person and developed apparent psychic abilities. The experience remains vivid in his memory, and his brother remains sensitive about the incident. Art gained special knowledge about the universe and experienced scenes from both past and future during the NDE. Biblical Assessment: This experience presents deeply concerning elements from a biblical perspective. While the out-of-body experience and observation of earthly events align with accounts of spiritual perception, the dark and sinister nature of Art's encounter raises serious theological red flags. The cloaked figure with a bone finger saying "You" resembles descriptions of death or demonic entities rather than angelic beings described in scripture. Biblical angels, when appearing to humans, typically begin with "Fear not" and bring messages of hope or instruction, not ominous pointing and dark accompaniment. The most problematic aspects include Art's ongoing sense of being followed by this dark entity and his claimed ability to "see the dead." Scripture strongly condemns necromancy and communication with the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Leviticus 19:31). The development of psychic abilities contradicts biblical teaching that spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit for edification of the church, not from encounters with dark entities. The absence of any redemptive message, divine love, or biblical truth in this experience, combined with the threatening nature of the entity and ongoing dark presence, suggests this may have been a demonic deception rather than a divine encounter. First John 4:1 warns to "test the spirits" and this experience fails that test by producing fear, darkness, and unbiblical practices rather than the fruit of the Spirit.
