In September 1993, Tonya underwent what was supposed to be a simple medical testing procedure for severe abdominal pain. Complications arose, and she was told to make any last requests as it was unclear if she could be saved. During this life-threatening event, she had a profound near-death experience.
Upon leaving her body, time seemed to slow down, and she was met by two well-groomed young Black men wearing sunglasses who served as her escorts. They communicated telepathically, telling her to enter an older model vehicle resembling a Yellow Cab. She instinctively got in the back seat while they rode in front. Though they assured her all was well, she sensed their sadness about taking her to her destination. The vehicle moved upward at a peaceful pace rather than forward. As they ascended, Tonya saw ahead a beautiful sunset-like destination with brilliant red and gold hues surrounded by purple atmosphere. She describes it as a place of indescribable peace, joy, and security - feeling loved by everyone and loving everyone in return. The overwhelming sense of being "home" and "free" from all negativity was so powerful she didn't want to return. However, she was told it wasn't her time and was sent back. Since then, sunsets remind her of that heavenly destination. The experience transformed her life, helping her overcome past trauma including childhood sexual abuse, and brought healing to her marriage. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The angelic escorts align with biblical accounts of angels accompanying souls. The beautiful destination with brilliant colors resembles biblical descriptions of heaven's glory. The overwhelming love and peace reflects God's presence. The transformation and healing that followed demonstrates the fruits of genuine spiritual encounter. Unbiblical elements: The unusual portrayal of angels as men in sunglasses driving a cab is unconventional. The emphasis on personal choice and fulfillment ("fulfilled whatever I was supposed to do") rather than God's sovereignty over life and death timing presents theological concerns.
