On April 15, 1983, Tim was involved in a severe car accident where he flipped his vehicle end-over-end seven times and was thrown through the hardtop roof headfirst. He experienced clinical death with cessation of breathing and heart function. During this time, he had a vivid out-of-body experience where he observed the scene from about twelve feet above and twenty feet behind the ambulance, watching three people working on his body. He could see and hear everything with perfect clarity but felt emotionally detached from the scene.
He heard one of the medical personnel say "He's paralyzed," information he could not have known through normal means while unconscious. Next, he found himself "plastered" to the ceiling corner of a hospital room, looking down at people working on someone he recognized as himself. He then experienced rapid movement through what felt like a tunnel, seeing a small light in the distance that quickly became large and enveloping. He felt immense peace, love, and freedom from pain. Tim encountered what he believed to be God and another entity of light who communicated telepathically. The being asked him twice if he wanted to return, warning that there would be lifelong pain if he did. Tim made the conscious decision to return and immediately awoke in the hospital bed experiencing excruciating pain for the first time. Upon awakening, he told his wife he had been paralyzed - information he could only have known from his out-of-body observation. Remarkably, despite being pronounced paralyzed, he awoke without paralysis, which his doctor could not explain. The doctor warned him never to see a chiropractor due to his spinal injuries. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience includes classic biblical NDE elements such as encountering a divine presence believed to be God, beings of light that could represent angels, movement toward divine light, and the overwhelming sense of peace and love associated with God's presence. The tunnel experience could parallel transitions to the afterlife described in scripture. Unbiblical elements: The narrative presents the problematic concept of being given a choice to return, suggesting human agency over life and death rather than God's sovereign will. The "bargain" or "deal" made with the divine being contradicts biblical teaching about God's absolute authority over human life spans.
