During a family camping trip in 1990, Thelma was violently attacked while running to a secluded bathroom. An assailant grabbed her by the hair, struck her with brass knuckles, and left her with severe injuries including broken facial bones, a fractured skull, and extensive bruising. She was pronounced dead at the scene but was later revived.
During the attack, as her body fell to the ground, time seemed to slow down. She then experienced floating upward, enveloped in an overwhelming feeling of warm, secure love that she describes as indescribable - as if everyone on Earth loved her. She walked with her eyes closed, feeling the presence of two angelic beings on either side of her. She was shown a beautiful place and felt she had a choice to remain if she wanted, sensing that she had fulfilled whatever she was supposed to do in life. While contemplating staying in this wonderful state, she suddenly heard her baby daughter crying out to God to save her mama. This pulled her back to her body and consciousness. She awoke days later in the hospital with severe injuries. Her daughter had been in a police car when she heard over the scanner that "the victim has expired" and began praying desperately for her mother's return, which coincided with Thelma's revival. The experience left her with no fear of death and a profound understanding of love.
