In March 1984, Tami was six months pregnant when she awoke with severe leg pain. Initially believing she might pass out while preparing for the emergency room, she recovered briefly before her husband drove her to the hospital. Once at the emergency room, she began feeling faint again while lying down.
The emergency room staff quickly wheeled her into a treatment room and began working frantically on her. Tami could hear them saying, "We're losing her and the baby's heart rate is dropping." A nurse apologized, warning that she would feel tremendous pain from a needle stick in her wrist to draw blood and measure oxygen levels. However, Tami felt nothing but pure peace and no pain at all. She experienced a floating sensation and remembered thinking, "I just want to go to sleep." A voice quickly intervened, saying firmly, "No, it's not your time." The emergency room staff administered a dose of heparin after determining she had a blood clot. Once the medication was given, she awoke to excruciating pain. Unknown to Tami at the time, a doctor had taken her husband aside and told him that neither she nor their daughter were expected to survive. Days later, an X-ray revealed two pulmonary emboli (blood clots on the lung), which the medical team believed had occurred during her fainting episodes.
