Sylvia experienced a ruptured brain aneurysm with hemorrhage and swelling on November 28, 1999. She was given a fifty percent chance of survival and placed on life support for several days. The pain was so severe that she lost consciousness rapidly.
During her unconscious state, Sylvia found herself immersed in an intense, bright light that felt like a hot summer day. She was drawn into this light and became part of it, experiencing no pain or fear - only warmth, peace, love, and serenity. The experience was so wonderful that she wanted to remain in the light. She encountered her recently deceased grandmother in a field picking green beans. Her deceased mother also appeared, wearing a white gown. Sylvia reached out to touch her mother but could not reach her. She was aware of others present but only recognized these two deceased relatives. Through what seemed like telepathy, Sylvia was told she could not stay, that it was not her time. When she regained consciousness, she was angry about not being able to remain in the light. She immediately told her sister she wanted to go back, expressing love for her and asking her to care for her two children. Her next memory was of severe, horrible pain. The experience fundamentally changed Sylvia's perspective on death. She gained sharper visual acuity during the experience despite being very near-sighted normally.
