Steven survived a severe apartment fire with smoke inhalation so extreme that the emergency room doctor said he had the highest carbon monoxide level ever seen in a survivor and called him a miracle. During the incident, while still in the smoke-filled apartment, Steven saw two silhouettes without faces or visible limbs, appearing from the chest up about 5-7 feet away and elevated at a 45-degree angle. Despite the danger, he felt no fear, only trying to communicate his aliveness through blinking, attempted speech, and finger movements. When he wiggled his fingers and looked down, he discovered himself floating 5-6 feet above his body, which lay in a fetal position below. He experienced "the peace that surpasses all human understanding" during this out-of-body state. The silhouettes communicated telepathically, telling him three times to "Go to sleep. Everything will be alright." He complied, curling into a fetal position while floating, then felt himself drop down slightly before awakening in the hospital.
