Stanley fainted in a college film class upon seeing blood in a documentary. A Vietnam veteran classmate later said he thought Stanley was dead, not just unconscious. During the experience, Stanley went first to what he describes as "heaven" where he felt in the presence of a divine power, though he saw no specific religious figure despite his Christian background. Then remarkably, he traveled to a pre-universe state before physical existence, experiencing a timeless eternity in a "sea of souls" where individual boundaries weren't defined, like waves in an ocean. He was individual yet part of a larger whole. God, seeming apart from or higher than the souls, then created the physical universe. Stanley witnessed everything from the beginning - formation of stars, evolution of Earth - with simultaneous complete awareness of every living thing including microbes.
He experienced his own life and death, after which his soul floated above Earth in naked human form with godlike omniscience. He became aware of gripping something (keys) in his hand and was informed by God he was still tied to the physical world. His soul fell back through a dark birth-canal-like tunnel with stinging photons, fighting to stay but unable to prevent return. Upon awakening, he was amazed structures still existed "after all that time" and discovered he held his Indian friend's keys - the friend later explained his culture's custom of placing brass in the hand to keep souls in bodies. Stanley learned absolute and unconditional forgiveness exists for everyone (even Hitler), that earthly actions have no eternal importance, and that all religions are human products not reflecting true spiritual reality. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The divine presence and creation sequence echo Genesis. The pre-existence realm of souls has some parallel to biblical concepts of God knowing us before formation (Jeremiah 1:5). Life review and omniscient awareness after death align with biblical judgment concepts. The return journey resembles a spiritual birth. Transformation and loss of death fear reflect biblical themes. Unbiblical elements: Universal absolute forgiveness regardless of repentance contradicts biblical salvation requirements. The claim that earthly actions have no eternal importance opposes biblical judgment and eternal consequences. Pre-existence of souls conflicts with biblical creation theology. Dismissal of all religions as merely human constructs undermines biblical revelation.
