At age four, Shelley had a drowning experience in a pool that has predisposed her to spiritual experiences throughout her life. She remembers the incident vividly - sinking to the bottom of the pool, looking up at the water's surface above, feeling an initial burst of panic followed by everything becoming very bright and peaceful. She then found herself floating near the roof of the indoor pool, observing from above as her uncle waded through the water with a look of near-panic on his face. She watched him pick her up from the water and place her on the poolside.

Upon returning to her body, she choked and gasped while her parents stood over her arguing about who was supposed to be watching her. During the out-of-body experience, she felt only mild interest in what was happening to her body below, experiencing no emotion beyond curiosity. The experience was characterized by complete peace and an absence of fear about death. This early NDE has resulted in a lifelong absence of fear regarding death and has opened her to numerous spiritual experiences, including visits from her deceased son and husband in what she distinguishes as instructional "real" dreams versus common dreams. She reports increased intuition and some premonition experiences following her childhood NDE.

--- Biblical Summary ---

Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience aligns with biblical concepts of the spirit's existence separate from the body. The peace that surpasses understanding during near-death reflects biblical descriptions of divine peace. The subsequent spiritual sensitivity and experiences with deceased loved ones could parallel biblical accounts of spiritual visions and dreams from God.

Unbiblical elements: The description of ongoing contact with deceased relatives through dreams, while not explicitly condemned in scripture, treads into territory that conservative theology typically associates with mediumship, which is warned against in scripture. However, the experiencer distinguishes these as divine/instructional rather than sought-after occult practices.
