Shane, diagnosed with seizure disorder, had been drinking beer at the lake all day, which interacted dangerously with his medication. On the drive home, he felt himself losing consciousness, told his cousin "I think I am dying," and then had a grand mal seizure. He stopped breathing for approximately four minutes while his cousin performed CPR on the highway roadside. During this time, Shane experienced a classic out-of-body experience, floating about ten feet above the scene and observing his cousin beating on his chest and slapping his face while a police officer stood by without helping. His cousin was yelling at the officer to do something, but the officer just stood there.
Shane reports being fully conscious and aware during the OBE, with all five senses active. He felt no panic or fear about not breathing - he knew he wasn't breathing but felt he didn't need to. The experience was peaceful and calm. When he realized the gravity of the situation, he thought "I have to get back down there" and immediately returned to his body, taking a deep breath as paramedics arrived. The experience was so clear and natural that Shane finds it easy to describe, though he has not shared it with others.
