In May 2007, Robert had severe pneumonia requiring a ventilator and induced coma with little oxygen getting to his brain. During his coma, he found himself coming up from behind and above his neighbor as she walked down the hospital hallway. He noticed she was carrying a McDonald's bag in her right hand and observed her clothes (jeans, shirt, etc.) and the cleanliness of the hospital. He had no awareness of his body and experienced the scene from outside himself. He later confirmed this observation with his neighbor and wife. He also mentioned having a second experience during his coma involving deceased beings, though this was separate from the out-of-body observation. The experience changed his religious beliefs and he felt much more at peace with others and the world afterward.
