Randall arrived at a heart clinic for routine evaluation of his implanted CRT-D pacemaker device. During the test, a new nurse practitioner made a critical error - she didn't realize that since his recent A-V ablation surgery, his heart was 100% dependent on the device to keep beating. She turned off the pacing to test how his heart functioned without assistance, instantly stopping his heart. At that moment, Randall entered a dark place and experienced complete peace, contentment, and mild euphoria. Just as he began to feel something else occurring, he was brought back when the nurse realized her mistake and reactivated the device.
When consciousness returned, his regular nurse was standing there repeatedly asking if he was okay. The nurse who made the error was visibly shaking and scared. The company representative also came running in, and all were very concerned about his condition. Despite the brevity, the experience left Randall with a lasting sense of peace about death and an unusual desire to have experienced more of the NDE before being brought back. Looking back, Randall feels almost cheated that he wasn't able to go further into cardiac arrest to experience his near-death experience more completely.
