In 1964, Ralph's mother Esther had a prophetic dream that she and Aunt Sarah would rescue him from under a house. Since Aunt Sarah had died a year earlier, Ralph dismissed it. His mother, gifted with prophetic abilities, died of breast cancer in July 1964. On January 7, 1965, Ralph heard noise in the basement boiler room. Upon opening the door, he noticed the gauges were maximized just before the boiler exploded, blowing out the concrete wall and sending him flying. He was burned 100% of his body - 40% first degree, 20% second degree, and 40% third degree burns.
Someone mysteriously picked him up and helped him up the stairs, but when he reached the top, his helpers had vanished and only his father stood in the kitchen. During his near-death state, his deceased mother appeared to him being held by a man with a red beard and plaid skullcap. She prophesied he would marry, have two daughters, and his girlfriend would break her leg. When he told the nurse about the vision, she said his girlfriend was coming to visit. The next day, the nurse informed him his girlfriend had broken her leg, confirming the prophecy. Later, his mother appeared again when doctors planned to amputate his legs. She told him to get up and walk when the nurse returned. Despite the nurse's warnings about bleeding out, Ralph insisted on trying. He not only walked but danced with the nurse's aide, surprising doctors who then canceled the amputation.
