Paul was driving to visit his father's grave on December 24, 1971, when his car left the road near Penistone village. His wife Christine and sister-in-law were passengers, neither wearing seatbelts. The car accelerated uncontrollably along a grass verge for 150 yards before making an inexplicable right turn through a gateway in a stone wall into a pasture, as if guided to that position.
During the accident, Paul saw a plank of wood moving slowly toward the windscreen and was convinced it would kill him. As he realized death was imminent, he experienced a swirling vortex concentrated in his head and exited through the top of his head. He found himself traveling upward in total darkness within a spherical form, with a wonderful sense of wellbeing, thinking "If this is being dead, I like it." He traveled at great speed toward a small circular light that grew larger. From this disc of light came an authoritative voice commanding "Go back." He instantly returned to his body with only a black eye, while Christine suffered a collapsed lung and her sister a cracked vertebra. Paul had no specific veridical observations of earthly events. The experience was purely spiritual, involving travel through darkness toward divine light. The car's seemingly guided path through the gateway rather than hitting the wall suggested divine intervention. He understood the light to represent Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The experience eliminated his fear of death and created yearning for heaven.
