Pamela experienced a near-death event during a prolonged sleep apnea episode in 1993. Her throat collapsed and closed off, preventing breathing. She struggled desperately for air, experiencing sensations similar to drowning, before suddenly no longer needing to breathe despite her throat remaining closed.
During her experience, she found her consciousness free-floating in what felt like the darkness of deep space. She mentally turned to review her life, seeing everything simultaneously with initial apprehension. She then began "laughing" when she realized the personality of "Pam" was merely like a game piece in Monopoly - an illusion. She understood that the "I Am" was her true, eternal identity. Upon this realization, she turned and saw a Light brighter than a million suns that didn't hurt her vision. The Light radiated all-encompassing unconditional love and felt sentient with God's presence, like the biblical father welcoming home the prodigal son. The light seemed to dance with ecstasy at her return. She felt the entire universe opening its arms with bubbling delight and joy. Her only veridical observation was internal - the complete cessation of breathing need despite her throat remaining closed [UV]. She had the thought it wasn't fair she was having such a wonderful experience while her family wasn't, which immediately sent her back to her body. Upon return, she woke with a gulp of air and began sobbing as her entire body throbbed with overwhelming love, feeling as if each cell was a separate heart overflowing with love. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience strongly aligns with biblical themes including encountering God's presence as light (1 John 1:5), experiencing unconditional divine love, and the prodigal son reference directly from Luke 15. The concept of true identity beyond earthly personality resonates with 2 Corinthians 5:17 about being a new creation in Christ. The overwhelming love and transformation align with biblical encounters with the divine. Unbiblical elements: The description of earthly life as merely a "game" like Monopoly could minimize the biblical view of life's sacred purpose. The concept of the "I Am" as her true identity might blur the distinction between human and divine, as "I AM" is God's name in Exodus 3:14. The universalist tone suggesting immediate welcome without mention of Christ or repentance could contradict evangelical soteriology.
