Oliver experienced insulin shock and lost consciousness in a restaurant doorway. Emergency medical technicians responded and he had an out-of-body experience in the ambulance. During his NDE, he transcended through a grey-whitish light and traveled through a transparent tunnel where he saw tiny black dots he understood to be departed souls. A massive silhouette approached him and told him "turn around, this is not your time." He described crossing what he compared to the River Jordan and seeing souls as black dots below. Upon returning, Oliver found his father paying his bill at the emergency room. His father was later diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, which Oliver believes was the reason he was sent back - to help his father die.
