In early 1969, Mike K experienced an out-of-body experience during an aircraft crash on the USS Hancock. During night flight operations, an F-8 fighter crashed on the fantail, exploding on impact. The airplane broke in half with burning fuel coming at personnel at 110 mph. Mike describes seeing the event in slow motion, frame by frame, despite the actual high speed of events. He found himself looking at himself from a position high and to the right of where he was standing, then experienced being approximately 100 feet above the ship, which appeared small below him. A loud, clear voice commanded "move" - not as an external sound but directly in his consciousness. The voice left no doubt he was to go back. Mike moved immediately and survived, later manning a fire hose. Thirty years later, he found the person next to him on a website who confirmed pulling Mike from the fire, though Mike doesn't remember that part. The experience was accompanied by strong feelings of not wanting to return and awareness of a large presence above him.
