On January 28, 1997, Nettie P had a terrible childbirth that should have been cesarean. When the doctor realized it was too late, both mother and baby were in danger. A forceps delivery was performed and Nettie was apparently "dead" at the time according to her mother. Nettie clearly remembers floating above watching them work on her son to get him breathing, cleaning him up and passing him from relative to relative while they worked on her. She kept asking people to hand her the baby but nobody answered. The following day she received three units of blood when they realized she hadn't been given transfusions and couldn't sit up without fainting. Her mother insisted she hadn't been speaking and couldn't have seen anyone doing anything to her son because she had been "dead" at the time. The experience confirmed things she already knew were true.
