On June 12, 1981 (Philippine Independence Day), Nathan I was hit by a van while crossing the street. He had just passed law school entrance exams. The van impact resulted in burst liver, fractured cervical vertebrae, ribs and humerus, requiring emergency splenectomy. Immediately after impact, Nathan became unconscious but mentally conscious. He saw a bright light above and the faces of his officemates at Philippine National Bank came flashing back rapidly like playing cards. He saw his unconscious body on the ground from above and perceived a bright light. He felt he had a choice between going to the light or returning to his body. When he saw his body, he chose to return. Nathan had been accepted to law school and had strong will to survive. The experience included heightened visual clarity and time distortion.
