On October 9, 2005, Mike was in a near head-on collision (45-degree angle) with both cars traveling about 60 mph. After crossing the median, a surgeon deliberately drove into Mike's path to prevent the car from going off the road into trees and a ditch. This surgeon then intervened at the scene, maneuvering Mike's shattered leg to stop the bleeding, saving his life as he had lost five pints of blood. Mike was trapped for thirty minutes while rescue workers used the Jaws of Life, experiencing excruciating pain and fear, repeatedly saying "I am so tired" before finally letting go and exhaling.
Upon letting go, Mike instantly found himself at the edge of Earth's atmosphere staring into space, seeing stars, novas, supernovas, quasars, and black holes - images he later recognized on the Hubble Space Telescope website. He felt no pain, only instant peace, stillness, calm, and incredible perfect love. He experienced a oneness with everything, where everything was connected. Colors were brighter, more vivid, including some not seen on Earth. When a fireman yelled his name, he returned to his body in pain. This happened again when he let go a second time. He saw a black hole/tunnel and wondered if this was "the tunnel people see when they die." By thinking about being at a different angle to see into it, he instantly traveled there at the speed of thought. Inside the hole, he saw swirling colors of turquoise, yellowish, and blue shades different from Earth. He instinctively knew he couldn't go near the tunnel or wouldn't come back. The experience left him with no fear of dying, knowing we are eternal spirit beings connected to God with immeasurable power and possibilities. He became obsessed with quantum physics, astrophysics, spirituality, and helping others. He later married his nurse Noelle who cared for him in the hospital, and they had a son named Alexander.
