Mickiel, who believed he was healthy with good eating and exercise habits, woke at 12:30 AM in August 2005 with severe heartburn. Lying on his left side waiting for it to pass, the pain worsened and became extreme. He realized it was a heart attack and tried to relax. When the pain suddenly disappeared, he searched for signs of breathing and heartbeat but found nothing. With no pain or worry but his mind still working, he realized he had died.

He went to an extremely dark place, darker than any room without windows or light could be. Yet he became very happy and filled with joy, thinking he would be the first in his extended family to find out what comes after death. He began leaving his body when suddenly he was slammed back with pain, hurt, and worry. His sheets and body were soaked with sweat and the pain returned. A cardiologist later confirmed the heart attack, and he underwent bypass surgery.

The experience caused a profound personality change - he became much more relaxed and mellow, a change everyone noticed. He lost all fear of death, knowing the death experience is painless and joyful. His view of religion transformed: he now sees all religions as trying to explain the same event with their own spin, believing it doesn't matter which window you choose to look through.

--- Biblical Summary ---

Biblical elements: The consciousness after physical death confirms the soul's immortality. The initial joy and happiness could reflect entering God's presence. The profound personality transformation toward peace reflects spiritual renewal. The loss of death's fear aligns with 1 Corinthians 15:55.

Unbiblical elements: The extremely dark place without explanation differs from biblical afterlife descriptions. The religious relativism that "all religions explain the same event" and "it doesn't matter which window" directly contradicts Jesus' exclusive claims in John 14:6 and Acts 4:12.
