Michel experienced a hemorrhagic stroke on the night of October 28-29, 2000, around 10:30 PM. While answering the telephone, he felt discomfort followed by immediate loss of consciousness, dizziness, and inability to speak. He underwent emergency surgery and spent three weeks in a coma on a ventilator with episodes of oxygen deprivation. During this time, he had profound experiences that he believes occurred during clinical death.
Michel found himself lying on something very soft and warm (possibly floating), looking downward in an extended position, feeling extremely comfortable and at peace. He observed a scene about 50 meters away as a detached observer from above. He saw a person in white (doctor or nurse) through what appeared to be a bay window of his room. Everything was bathed in tremendous, non-dazzling brightness. The scene occurred twice with variations: First, a young doctor with a stethoscope held his head saying "but it's not possible" while paradoxically showing no worry. Second, the same person on the telephone saying "The first time he had one chance in a hundred of pulling through, the second time, one in a thousand." The setting was remarkable - the person sat on brilliant white steps (about 15 steps) leading to a great hall with glass doors reflecting the sun. Beyond was something darker but not threatening. The surrounding landscape appeared as a perfectly manicured garden or prairie with luminous green grass, white and yellow flowers of vivid colors. Everything was immaculately clean with no dead branches or faded flowers, bathed in indescribable light. Michel later believed this resembled the Garden of Eden.
