Michael experienced cardiac arrest a few days after four-vessel coronary artery bypass surgery in 1993. While lying in the intensive care unit, he felt a fluttering sensation followed by alarms sounding on the monitors. Hospital staff rushed in, placed a board under him, pulled off his gown, and attached equipment with wires to his chest. At the moment the board was placed under him, he pulled out of his body and was looking down on himself from above. He could see the medical staff working on him frantically. Suddenly, he was back in his body looking down at his feet, experiencing no pain during the entire event.
This brief but profound out-of-body experience occurred during a witnessed cardiac arrest with immediate medical intervention. The observation of medical procedures from an elevated perspective while clinically compromised represents a classic veridical NDE element.
