Mellony, who is semi-handicapped and relies on help for daily tasks, experienced a life-threatening event in September 1997 when she fell from her wheelchair while cleaning a cat box containing ammonia. Unable to move away from the toxic fumes, she began inhaling them and quickly experienced chest tightness, vomiting, and a sensation of pressure in her head. Despite the dangerous situation, she suddenly felt at peace and knew she was safe.
She was propelled out of her body and could see herself lying on the floor beside the cat box. She felt a pulling sensation and traveled quickly, hearing music and bells ringing. After a period of darkness, a light appeared to her left. She felt like pure energy full of power and love. She could hear voices of other people passing over and received a message in a strange language telling her that her mentally challenged daughter would receive a great reward in the future and that she would find love for her very ill grandmother. She was told she had to go back and was pulled away, re-entering her body through her head. Her support worker arrived and gave her oxygen before she was taken to the hospital. Remarkably, her estranged grandmother was in a nearby ward, and they reconciled after twenty years of separation. Eleven years later, her daughter received treatment that greatly improved her quality of life, fulfilling the prediction from her experience.
