Mat Y experienced an NDE on October 16, 2006, during a charity bike ride for the Livestrong Foundation in memory of his 18-year-old cousin who had died from cervical cancer. He crashed head-first at 45-50 mph when his father, who was drafting ahead, stopped without signaling. Mat was initially unconscious, then came to bleeding profusely with a broken body. After blacking out again, he "woke up" in a completely pitch-black room, feeling bodiless with no sensory input. A polite, grandfather-like voice spoke to him as an amplified thought, asking "You know why you're here?" After Mat said nothing, the voice said "Oh you do, this shouldn't be quite so difficult then." After what seemed like forever, the voice said "Oh, never mind, they want you back." Mat then woke up in the hospital after a 20-minute ambulance ride with multiple staff around him.
