Manuel was riding a motorcycle at night at 50-60 mph on an unlighted highway when he came off the road on a curve. He felt a tremendous blow through his body and found himself floating above the accident scene, observing people on the road and attendants putting him in the ambulance. He was taken to a regional hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred 125 miles to a larger hospital. He was sedated and unconscious for two days, losing significant blood from his lungs with difficulty breathing. During eight days in intensive care, he experienced a second, more conscious separation from his body. While lying in bed with IVs, catheters and monitors, he felt himself rising and leaving his body, dissolved in air but still himself. He observed the room from above, seeing his body with all the apparatus. He felt greatly relieved and happy to not suffer his body's pains. He found himself in the corridor and saw a nurse walking down it who entered his room and approached his bed. He heard a rushing sound and found himself back in his body as the nurse spoke to him. He felt disappointed at having to suffer again and wondered what he might have discovered if the nurse hadn't entered. The experience gave him certainty that at death he would discover the answer. He sustained spinal fracture, fractured ribs, and bilateral hemopneumothorax.
