On December 10, 1990, Larry was instantly crushed by approximately 3,000 pounds when an airstair collapsed on him. He suddenly found himself in what he calls "the white room," observing his mangled body trapped under the collapsed steel structure from above. The experience was characterized by a very pleasant, peaceful sensation with no voices or ghostly forms - just pure awareness and serenity. His landlord discovered him in the hangar and was so horrified by the sight that he vomited, later telling Larry it was the worst thing he had seen since World War II. Larry was transported by helicopter for nine and a half hours of surgery followed by a five-month hospital stay.
The experience profoundly impacted Larry's worldview, particularly his thoughts on mortality and the existence of a higher power. Despite being raised by a Nazarene preacher and having no positive thoughts about religion after age 11, this experience convinced him that "something put us here" and gave us everything we need.
