Joseph was driving to buy flowers for his wife who had given birth two days earlier when a drunk driver ran a stop sign, hitting his car broadside on the driver's side. After hitting the brake hard, he felt warm blood running down his face and thought he was dying. He said a prayer asking God for forgiveness. At that moment, he noticed he was floating above his car a few feet, observing himself in the driver's seat with bloody hair. He vividly remembers saying to himself that this must be what dying is about.
The feeling was euphoric - the most incredible feeling he had ever experienced in his entire life. As he floated higher, reaching fifty to sixty feet above the car, he noticed he had no arms or legs and could not see any part of his body, though his thinking remained very clear. He continued floating higher in a dark void with no light above, until his car appeared only half an inch long from his elevated perspective. He observed people gathering around the accident scene below. He awakened in an ambulance with sirens blaring, his head bandaged and ribs hurting. His doctor, who had been at a party, was waiting at the hospital in his tuxedo. When Joseph recounted the experience, the doctor attributed it to shock. Joseph kept the experience secret for decades, fearing it would harm his new dental practice if people thought him unstable. The experience left him without fear of death, feeling a sense of well-being and euphoria that has never been matched.
