Joni, as a young child around 1936-37, was hospitalized with erysipelas and received blood transfusions trying to save her life. She was pronounced dead and word was sent to her family. During this time, she experienced floating above her hospital bed, initially thinking she was on steep stairs but realizing she was hovering near the ceiling. She then found herself standing by hedges where a young girl who looked like her older sister told her she was her sister and led her to a beautiful place with rolling hills, green grass, and a nearby stream. The girl said it was "something like a school" and led Joni to a large tree where she sat on a branch with other silent children and babies on the ground. Beyond a boundary she couldn't cross were what appeared to be crystal buildings. The sister-figure left to find out if Joni could stay, then returned saying she couldn't remain and had to go back, though Joni was reluctant to leave.
